Natural Dyeing in the Highlands

We had a fantastic weekend of natural dyeing, creating nearly 30 different shades, a complete rainbow of beautiful hues.

Over the weekend we dyed with; Gorse flowers, elderberries, tree lichen (small amounts from fallen branches), madder, cochineal, indigo, turmeric and and onion skins. We had eight dye pots on the go at different times, two fires and lots of tea and cake! We dyed white and brown Shetland fleece, silk and cotton. All our guests made a little sample book to take home as well as taking a bag of the fleece they had dyed. It was a lovely start to our dyeing season. Our next course is May 17th-18th and by then the braken will be out, which make a lovely bright green-yellow.
