Teaching wool crafts to school children
We had a great day last Thursday running our wool and sheep day at Glen Urquhart High school. We managed to get children from all of the three local primary schools, Cannich, Balnain and Glen Urquhart schools. We had 55 children all P6’s and P7’s. We worked in collaboration with RHET and Crofting Connections offering the children workshops in; crofting and sheep farming, natural dyeing, felting, spinning and weaving. The children were split into mixed groups so they could meet children from other primary schools in the area, each group spent 30 minutes at each of the 5 stations, giving them a taste of all the crafts on offer.
Crofting connections provided a wonderful lunch time snack of bannocks and mutton pies, which the children, teachers and crafters loved!
It was great working alongside local craft people, crofters, teachers and farming organisations. The day was a great success and the children were totally engaged.
The event was relaxed and fun and we have had some great feedback from the schools and the kids and we hope to do it all again at some point.
A huge thank-you to
Ele Forster (Felting), Isabel Scott (Weaving), Alison (Spinning), Euan Fraser (Crofting) and Maggie from RHET and Brid from Crofting Connections.
